The Uruli box transcends traditional functionality, transforming the classic Indian vessel into a work of art inspired by the moon's ethereal grace. Meticulously handcrafted, the uruli’s base showcases hemispherical walls that flow seamlessly into an expansive center, echoing the moon's timeless allure and its profound cultural significance in Indian heritage.

Adorning this exquisite base is a sleek, concave copper dish that serves as a lid elevating the uruli’s versatility. When the lid glides open along the uruli’s curvature, it elegantly mirrors the moon's phases, adding a poetic touch to the design. This sophisticated interplay of form and function creates a luxurious container for treasured heirlooms or personal artifacts, embodying both utility and opulence.

The copper sheet that forms these exceptional pieces are handpicked and store for months on end allowing the grains of copper to anneal and harden. The trained artisan's eye then chooses the right sheet to begin the work of bending and forming the uruli and the concave dish. The elemental dance of this metal with fire and water, heating and quenching, can at times undergo 5-6 repetitions which can take months on end to produce. Eventually this pieced honed by the expert eye and feel of the artisans take its final shape and it finished in its distinct style.

This uruli bowl comes in the polish striations, where the hand of the master craftsman skilfully bends the copperware producing defined polished ridges accentuating the curvature of the piece, thus delivery a more contemporary feel.

Each copper concave dish, which acts like as a lid for the box, is hand spun, and has the indelible "artisans' signature", a remanent of their work and knowledge, making no two pieces the same.

Design Philosophy

The Chand Uruli Box is an ode to the celestial dance of the moon, encapsulating its shifting phases in a poetic interplay of copper and stone. Inspired by traditional uruli vessels used in offerings and rituals, this design reimagines their sacred essence with contemporary refinement. The concave copper dish, serving as a lid, glides along the uruli’s curvature, subtly mirroring the waxing and waning of the moon. The presence of a meticulously hand-carved stone dish deepens this celestial narrative, allowing for two primary dispositions:

The first, when placed beneath the uruli, it embodies the Poornachandra (Full Moon), emphasizing the radiant glow of brushed copper against the cool, tactile surface of stone.

The second, when nestled between the uruli and its lid, it represents Grahanam (Eclipse), where the copper’s reflective brilliance arcs around the stone, tempering its luminosity in an elegant visual metaphor.

This design is not just an object of beauty but a tribute to time, ritual, and the moon’s profound influence on tradition and spirituality.

Crafting Techniques

The Chand Uruli Box is the result of master artisans’ meticulous craftsmanship:

- Hand-Spun Copper Lid: The concave copper lid is hand-spun, a technique that requires precision and skill to create a smooth, flowing curvature. Each lid bears the artisan’s signature touch—subtle remnants of their craftsmanship that make every piece unique.

- Brushed Copper Finish: After shaping, artisans carefully brush the surface with fine bristles, creating a matte, muted glow that enhances its natural radiance.

- Hand-Carved Stone Dish: Sourced from the ancient town of Mahabalipuram, the granite or marble dish is meticulously chiseled and sculpted by skilled stone carvers, following centuries-old traditions. The grooves carved into the stone allow for seamless positioning within the uruli’s design, balancing both aesthetic and functional elements.

Each piece is an individual work of art, reflecting the artisan’s hand, perception, and mastery.

Care Guide

Copper Care:
Gently clean with a soft cloth and mild soap. Avoid abrasive scrubbing.
To maintain its luster, use a natural copper polish or a lemon-and-salt solution occasionally.
Over time, copper develops a patina, this is a natural aging process that enhances its beauty. If you prefer the original shine, regular polishing is recommended.

Stone Care:
Wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust and residue. Avoid harsh chemicals, as they may affect the stone’s natural texture.

Packaging

Our Objects are presented in a handcrafted pine wood box, inspired by the Sandook, the traditional Indian chest used for safeguarding heirlooms and precious artifacts. Historically crafted from solid wood and reinforced with brass or iron, the Sandook was a symbol of preservation, ensuring that valuables were passed down through generations.

Reinterpreted for a contemporary context, our pine wood boxes retain the essence of this legacy while embracing a minimalist aesthetic. The natural grain of the wood is left visible, echoing the raw beauty of timeworn chests. Subtle finsihing of the edges, refining the smoothness of the surface are a nod to the intricate craftsmanship once seen in royal and household Sandooks, adding a refined yet understated elegance. The box is secured with a woven cotton or silk cord, reminiscent of ceremonial ties, reinforcing the significance of the objects within.

Designed not only for safekeeping but also for an elevated gifting experience, these handcrafted boxes preserve the artistry of Amaldhatu while paying homage to India’s rich tradition of craftsmanship.
